i know its been asked thousands of times before, but im looking at this boat
http://portland.craigslist.org/clk/boa/1149445216.html
and wondering what you guys think? the pics kind of scare me, but i dont have much to spend and just want something to throw a few people in and go skiing this summer. ive heard bayliners werent exactly put together the best, so wondering besides the normal stuff of walking on the floor and pushing around on the transom what to look for?

also, ive been looking at the aerial towers on ebay and wondering if this boat can handle a tower? this would be the first boat ive looked at since i boat my 14 footer a few years back.

Save your money and buy something in good shape. You may find yourself repairing more than boating. I am not a BL basher as I own an older one than this and love it but if it looks like that, you can bet there are a lot potential problems. Construction has less to do with longevity or condition IMO as I can attest to.

Re: bayliner

My advice if you're looking to get on the water cheap without a major hassle is to find an aluminum hull. Even if the deck and transom are shot it's not a major project to replace them.

So its got alittle carpet wear big deal thats a easy fix. Thats the newer force motor and thats good. I've owned 3 Bayliners 1984 & 1985 with force motors & 1987 with a 350 omc and they were all in great shape. Thats not a bad price for her.

Re: bayliner

There are three main areas to concentrate on when buying a boat -- especially when buying a used boat. 1) Engine, 2) hull, and 3) interior. Depending on what your mechanical and electrical skills are you need to look at each of these areas as they relate to your ability to repair them. If you are not mechanically inclined (and I mean you really know engines) then issues with the engine can be of less importance than say hull and interior because you can fix engine problems yourself. If you know nothing or very little about engines, then that represents a big deal and repairs would be very costly. I get the impression you are set to buy the first boat that happens to fall into your price range which generally is a big mistake. Interior condition does not affect performance but the hull and engine do. So if all you want is to get on the water, #1 and #2 are of key importance and #3 is just an eyesore. Be a little more objective and by all means demand an on-water test run. If you don't do that you best be offering salvage value because that's what you may have bought.

Re: bayliner

ive been looking around for a boat since last summer, just having a tough time deciding what is fair value, ive looked at nada and such, but the prices there seem to be off by thousands to what is actually available. i think im going to take a look at the boat this weekend, never hurts to look. if the floor is solid the carpet is no big deal, i can fix that. the interior i can most likely fix aswell. i just need to pick up a cylinder tester to make sure the head isnt shot. thanks for all your thoughts on this.

ive been around boating since i was a kid, bought a 14 footer at 18, and put a 35hp on it. used that thing alot for crabbing and started pulling one tube last year. the thing is i dont think it would pull a skier very well, and id like to get back into that. plus just having alittle bigger boat would make me feel better heading out and camping someplace.

thanks again.

Re: bayliner

Glastrons sometimes were built to handle a good bit extra HP than comparable boats so it could very well be within spec. You'll be much better off parts/service wise with an evinrude than a force.
