Central Iowa. Most of my boating is done on Saylorville Resevoir near Des Moines.

Re: "Beaching" a boat

why not just drive in where it's shallow enough, raise the lower unit, drop anchor & walk to the beach? duh! why risk beaching & damaging the hull?

I went out and looked at the keelguard product at www.keelguard.com. This looks like it's a fairly thick piece of plastic.

Does a keelguard affect a boat's ability to plane quickly and does it take off some top end speed?

Re: "Beaching" a boat

Never mind my last post. I looked further on the web site and there is a QA area that answers exactly this question.

Their answer is that it does not affect performance and on small boats may actually increase top speed slightly. I'm not sure why top speed would be increased.

Does anyone have any experience that would support this claim?

I've installed the KeelGuard on my Bowrider, and it works like a champ, you can barely see it. As far as increasing speed, who knows? I am sure it is a negligible increase, if any. I beach regularly down here in SC, and I was worried about the sand scraping up the keel so I went and shelled out the cash for it. I assume it would also offer some sort of minor protection if you were to hit some floating debris in the water. It was somewhat difficult to get it nice and flush when you got the KeelGuard over the chines, but it IS doable. Definitely worth the cash.

I have a 2000 Bayliner 1850 LX. I installed a Hambys keel guard for about $150. It's the peel and stick kind. The other one ($300) would not fit my boat according to the installer. I installed 6 ft black because the white and off white have a tendency to get ugly.

I have a white Keel Guard (around $150 from someplace over the internet in FL) on my fishing boat. Works well too.

I beach my Bayliner now without worring about scratching. I have to in order to get my 80 pound sheep- dog back in the boat. I've used them both for over 2 years and would reccomend either.

tg

it only takes an anchor and bow line to secure boat up in 1-2" of water. then none of your boat touches bottom. you do have to step into shallow water to get to shore , but why have a boat and be scared of the water?

I'm with you Dave.
I like the interactive approach to boating.
Who wears socks on a beach?
If it's that cold you'll have waders on anyhow.
