I recently took my 1999 mercury 115hp to have a new water pump installed as I have not done so in the 2 years I've had the boat (no problems was working fine just trying to keep it that way.) After installing the pump, the shop asked me if I have ever had problems getting the boat in gear from neutral, drive, or reverse and they were going to check it and get back to me. I have never had any problems with the motor or changing gears or speeds in the 2 years I've had the boat. I later get a call back from the shop informing me that the bearing carrier was bad and it would cost an extra $483 to replace (giving me a so called deal on labor charging me for 2 hours instead of the expected 2 1/2 at a labor cost of $100 an hour.) How likely is it that the bearing carrier would be damaged while replacing the water pump because I have never had a problem before. They want to charge me $200 to replace the water pump and now and extra $483 just to get the boat running again when it was running fine when I dropped it off. Are they just trying to get me to pay for their mistake.

It was not uncommon for our shop to notice water in the gear oil and pull the bearing carrier to inspect the gears. I have not seen a problem with the bearing carrier to cause problems shifting from N to F and R. This does not mean it cannot happen. Maybe carrier was cracked? Not sure what to tell you except if you decide to go with it ask them give you the old parts.
