I need to remove the prop shaft on my 1989 8hp Mercury. The manual shows the use of a special tool (bearing carrier tool 91-13664). Doing some searching on here and the net, it seems there is an alternate method that involves using the thrust hub to remove the bearing carrier and there is the possibility of making a home made "special tool" out of a piece of pipe. Can anyone explain how to use the thrust hub to do this alternate method or give me more information about the ID/OD of the pipe used to make a homemade tool from? From the info I found on the homemade tool, there needs to be 3x 1/2" wide slots at 120? around the pipe but that's all the info I can find on making the tool.

You have to look at the thrust hub on the motor and see if it has a removable silver cap on one side. If it dose you have to remove that cap and there should be spacers cast into it that will match up with the spokes of the carrier housing. By placing it on the prop shaft reversed and putting the prop and nut back on the shaft and turning the prop will unscrew the carrier from the LU along with the prop shaft and some of the internals of th LU. I belive it is a left hand thread so it would need to be turned as such. Not all are built as such and this might not work on your motor. JMO

Understood and thank you very much for that explanation of the process. I will check tomorrow to see if the thrust hub has the removable cap.

The book shows two diffrent desgine LU's for thr motor and realy dosen't go into much detail on the other so if yous dosen't have that removable cap you might have to make the pipe tool inorder to get the carrier out. You might need to use a screw driver to punch the cup off the thrust washer.

Just as a followup for anyone having this problem in the future and coming across this thread, if you have design 1, you can use this alternate method (explained above by oldman570) to remove the bearing carrier. Thanks again oldman570, it worked great for me.
