I need a couple of screws that hold the bearing case in the lower unit in an Evinrude 30ELCDM motor. Evinrude wants $8 a piece for them. 1/4" bolts are too small and 5/16 x18 or 20 didn't seem to go in.

Anyone know what size they are? And since seals aren't available what style seal would be the best choice?

Thanks.

The orginial screws I believe were 1/4 " fine thread. The screws have a gruve cut into them to hold an o-ring. Your best bet is to buy the screws and then find some o-rings to fit.

A 1/4" bolt fits way too loosely.

do you have any of the original screws remaining?

If so you can take them to your local fastener supply store or even a hardware store and they can match them up. Just be sure to get the right grade.

Lost.

We have some busy body neighbors that complain to code enforcement and everybody else, about everything. The city changed the grandfather rules at least 2x so that put our shop outside the limits, and permit didn't cover enlarging the building. The enforecement guy said they wouldn't have bothered if they hadn't gotten so many complaints. You can't put a lawn tractor in the front yard with a for sale sign either. I might add the building looked ok. We had to tear it down in 5 days or get fined $500 a day. Still can't find everything, since it is in a pile right now. Should have put them in with the water pump parts. Never dreamed they would cost $8 a piece so I didn't worry about it. We plan on putting up a lean too type shelter.

A real estate salesman told us it was against Federal law for the city to do this, after it was down and gone. Trouble is we would have had to hire a lawyer to fight it.
One of the joys of living in the city!

One of these complaining neighbors is disturbing his neighbors by doing a lot of grinding on old cars for profit in a non-business neighborhood. Chances are there will be some payback s. What goes around, comes around?

You asked!

The only thing I can suggest for you to do right now is take the plate the screws thread into to a machine shop and let them tell you the thread size.

By the way, what city are you in ?

There are a couple of used parts places I'll try.

We are actually in a County and not city limits. It's getting as bad as the city though. I'd rather not say where exactly as you never know who is watching.

The net seems like a big place but the more you use it the smaller it gets.

Boobie,

You were right after all. They are 1/4 x 28's. Guessing 1" long. The first opening is bigger than what the bolt grabs. I don't remember about the groove. You are probably right about that too.

Once I get the screws in the bearing case will be filled with transmission fluid and heated until a flywheel puller and j-hooks might pull the case out.

The gruve is in the head of the screw where the threads stop. It takes a 1/4 " ID o-ring which acts as a seal for the g/c oil. That's probably why BRP gets $8.00 for them.
