Bearing friction

Hello all,
I have just replaced my bearings on my 16 foot boat trailer and I am still hearing a little friction. It is almost a slight grinding sound. This is the reason I decided to replace them in the first place. After the installation, the driver side seems fine, but the passenger side still has a noise although the wheel spins freely. This is driving me nuts and I don't want to cause any damage. Do you have any ideas?

Re: Bearing friction

Does it have brakes? could be a shoe/drum rub.

Jack up the wheel and grab it at 3 and 9 to wiggle it front to back. If there is any slop you need to tighten the bearing more. (I doubt this is causing any noise though)

Usually if a bearing is making noise, it is a very bad thing. Be sure the noise is not coming from elsewhere.

Re: Bearing friction

Did you replace the bearings races? If not, then the new bearings you've installed will be bad in a short time and your effort has been wasted.

No brakes.

The races looked to be part of the hub. Is this unusual? I am at the point of replacing the entire hubs and saving the bearings as replacements.

The races are not part of the hub You can access them from the opposite side or the hub You will be able to tap em out with a punch or screwdriver.. You will be able to catch the inner edge of the race cuz it sits higher then the hub itself. Probable between 1/16 and an 1/8th in. You just kind of walk em out. Then clean out the [seat ]where the races sit , grease up the new races and tap em in, nice and straight. I use the old races and a block of wood to tap in the new races. It makes a distinct sound when you have em seated all the way. Nice and solid.
