If you are going to be in there working on them anyways just replace them, if they have been used at all with that grease on there they for sure got hot and the grease melted all the way into the pads. You might be able to clean the outer surface and sand and dink with them for a couple hours but they will never be right. Been there done that too many times, i have also heard you can bake the grease out, try that too while you are messing with them. If this were a roadside repair by all means hit them with the brakeclean otherwise I would recommend just buying new shoes. I have been into VW powered buggies for many years and they are famous for leaking gear lube(heated grease) onto the pads, they will work with a good cleaning for 1-2 trips then they just fade like you never touched them. Its almost the exact same system as surge trailer brakes.
