ok, so i have an 81' cajun brute with original trailer i had replaced the bearings and hub(after they failed on me and limped home). So new hub, new bearings 500miles later the bearings fail AGAIN! they were well greased with marine grease, they wore flat spots. Also as embarassing as it is, i am an aircraft mech. and have had to deal with vast types of bearings, deep groove ball/tapered/roller/everything. I packed them myself and was greased well! The races where fine nothing that stubbed a fingernail and in general smooth so what the f! One had to sease, from salt? the flats tell me something failed. one was pretty much exploded the other had flats.

Re: Bearings failure?

Flats on what? The rollers? I suspect you are incorrectly adjusting the spindle nut or assembling things incorrectly. The only way rollers can develop flat spots is if they are either seized or the bearings were adjusted so tight that they couldn't rotate. If that's the case, then the races would show abnormal wear patterns as well. Bearings simply don't fail at that frequency unless parts are incorrect, mismatched or assembled incorrectly. What pre-load/adjustment process did you use? What spindle size, what bearing numbers, did you change races when you changed bearings? If so, what process did you use to install the races?

Re: Bearings failure?

Check the bearing race inner diameter, when I bought my boat the original owner had 1 1/8" bearings on 1 1/16" axles...I wondered why the wheels leaned in a little at the top.
