Well, I now have an OB boat. My previous boat was a Hallett jet boat w/ a 460 V8 and a 100A alternator. That boat had a fairly powerful stereo system.
Now, with my Merc 115 OB, I have found that it only has a 16A stator. So, I have a few ?'s about accessory drain, such as a stereo system.
Firstly, if I really drain the main battery, will the stator be fine pushing it's max current of 16A for an extended period? I am not familiar with stators.
Secondly, I can see that I will be draining a battery(ies) faster than the stator can recharge them. I'll probably be pulling a steady 30A most of the time. I have considered a dual battery setup with a switch to be sure that I always have a starting battery on the ready in case I kill one of the batteries. Is this a common setup for those running stereo systems with a outboard? And would I just resign myself to the fact that I'd need to supplement the stator with a charger at the end of the day?

How about putting a less power hungry stereo in? You only need it to be heard in YOUR boat, not halfway across the Pacific! 30A at 12v, that's almost 400W. My home stereo is only 100W and I rarely run that past 30%... Good lord man, how loud do you need it?

Dual battery setup is the only set up I recommend... As I say, you can't get out and push...

Will the charging coils have a problem if run at maximum for an extended time? No....

I too wonder why so much audio power is needed but since it's your boat (but everyone elses ears) you definitely need a dual battery setup, dual battery switch, the second battery needs to be a very large deep cycle, and either a single or dual output on-board charger to top off either the deep cycle or both batteries (two output) by plugging it at the dock. Sound travels a long way over water and someone half a mile away doesn't need or want to here what you are listening to. Thumpity thump thump thumpity thump thump is not music anyway. It is orchestrated noise. There -- I've vented!

Guys, re noise pollution, I hear ya'll. I live 100' from the lake. On our community lake, I won't be needing much audio HP as I won't use it. Wife, kids plus a lake curfew mean I won't really need more power at those times.

But, I think everyone knows some lakes are "party" lakes, and some occassions like holidays people will let loose. This boat will get towed to these events where it is tolerated. For the times we will be out all night with the stereo, lights and accessories running, I want to make sure I don't damage my stator or get stuck with a dead battery. So for that, I now have a better understanding! Thanks for the tips.

I love it when someone seeks technical advice and receives unsolicited feedback regarding their potential NoiseMaker sound system. I *believe* stereo's these days have a volume control. hahha!!! Oh wait... they've been engineered with a volume control for decades - AMAZING!

I know we're all entitled to our own opinions about noise pollution (I'm with you on that) but I find it amusing when it's automatically assumed that the owner isn't considerate enough to know that.
