Re: before I throw in the towel...any ideas what I,m doing wrong???!!

Well...woke up this morning, called the local mechanic to see if I was missing anything and he just stated that if the lower gear is not locked in forward,it aint gonna go. I thought it was but the prop was spinning freely both ways.I jiggled the shift shaft in the lower and the prop locked and would not turn counter clockwise. 1 try and the unit was back together! Damn! If I had only paid attention yesterday I would have saved a hell of a lot of aggravation! Soooo..the lesson learned? Next time I,m taking the whole outdrive off to do a full service ( later this summer) and 2..if I do drop the lower...get a hand when putting it back together!!! Thanks guys for all the help! Now,on to the exhaust shutter!

If you do remove the upper as well make you get an alignment tool. Grease everything up per manual and oh yeah KEEP IT IN FORWARD. I ran into this problem (forward position) when I changed my bellows and gimbal bearing last year. Good luck.

What do the splines look like on the shaft? You are probably not getting that shaft lined up with the upper portion, I had to turn the prop by hand in order to get the shaft to engage with the upper unit once (after I files the dents out of the splines from repeated failed attempts).

Yea..as soon as I got the lower locked in, I could turn the prop ccw which I only had to nudge that way to get the splines lined up. Once I did that and got it back together it occured to me that when I did the impeller the last time ( approx 4 yrs ago) I ran into the same issue. Hopefully I,ll remember it the next time!
