I'm all about saving money (especially since the wife has EVERYTHING i buy for this boat recorded in quick books) I know down to the exact penny I have into my boat and as of this morning it $1,034.72. That includes the boat, trailer, motor and all the work Ive put into it.

To cut some corners I'm using my ice fishing transducer that came with my Lowrance 4x HDI I purchased this winter. With some scrap galvanized pipe and some custom fabricating I made the mount for it also.

Yesterday to save another $50, i built a anchor our of some random scrap iron i found laying around. total weight 24.6lbs! should be plenty for my 16 aluminum boat. :)

An anchor is not about weight, at least not a modern anchor. Google fluke anchors and see how they are made. A 5# fluke anchor should do it.

BTW. second source all your supplies. A lot of boaters buy basic stuff at "marine" (higher) prices, and I am not sure why.

I didn't buy a boat to save money. I don't go on vacation to save money. Yada, yada.

As a kid we used to rent boats that came with a 5# coffee can filled with cement and an I-bolt. Not worth a ...

A high quality Chene sells for $28 and a poor-man's navy can be had for less that 20 bucks. You did a nice job on your project, but its holding capacity is questionable. Remember, an anchor is a safety item as well.

I'm all for being frugal, and sure when your anchor grabs hold of something it should hold. The only down side is it may not let go what it grabbed hold of. Those are some pretty stiff spikes. Like the other things you put together also

Edit: I have one of these on my 23 footer

let me clarify my situation, this is a aluminum boat for the small lakes in my area, I live in north Dakota, not going to be in any oceans with this lol, as for it being a
"safety issue" the only time i plan on using it is to anchor my boat to do some vertical jigging, i don't ever plan on taking this boat out if there are high winds.

i guess if it dosnt work than at least i can say hey i tried.

as for buying a anchor, i guess i should have clarified i live in the middle of nowhere :p .... our only local sporting good store... had an anchor for $100.... being the only supplier in a 100 mile radius i guess they have a monopoly on things....

Looks like a Crestliner? I had the same thing in a 14'. Lb wise, that anchor will be more than enough and then some. I'm thinking it will work fine. Get it wedged in rocks and you may be cutting the rope.....

For just small lake fishing that is fine. And if it does drift, just consider it slow trolling! I'm in ND also, and for the most part, an anchor doesn't help in safety on the small lakes. If you are in trouble in weather you just wait a minute and drift up on shore. Or just get out and stand up! On the bigger lakes or especially the missouri, a good anchor is a safety item.

Wow, she tracks every penny spent on the boat?

Looks like the tool chests cost more than the boat. :D

Make sure you secure the battery and cover the terminals, or the dnr will have issues with it.

Now, go catch a fish.

yea, im taking it to odland damn hopefully as soon as the ice is gone just to test everything out, once i feel confortable in it i might try tobacco gardens (lake sakagwea) ONLY if the weather is calm and just stay in the bays.
