I have a "Evinrude 4" which has been in my garden shed for some time. I now want to get it going again. Starts fine in a tub, but no water (or fine mist) from the tiny exhaust holes. No idea where to go from here need a manual, but first need year of engine.
Numbers on plate are: 49B6B B07249 Made in Belgium. It is a rope start, no clutch or gears. Visible flywheel on top. Can anybody help please ?

Re: Belgium 4hp ? year and manual

49B6 is listed as 1969 but I am not happy that is correct.

It does not look like any of the 1969 models on the BRP parts list!

Go to the "Repair and Maintenance" index then to "Engine FAQs" and you will find a post on "Awakening a sleeping outboard" you will find useful info there and also probably in some of the other Engine FAQs.

A spray or mist of water is all you will see from the exhaust relief hole as the majority of the cooling water goes down the leg to leave with the main exhaust gas flow.

A new pump impeller would be wise if it has not been changed recently.

I wondered about that. I wondered if the number had been mis-read and was really 49B66 which is 1979.

It looks so much older though with its exposed flywheel and presumably no recoil starter.

49B6 is a 1969. 49B66 is a 1979. The general design of your motor suggests it is a '69. That funky carrying handle makes it look funny.
The water pump is in the bulge right above the lower unit. Remove the four bolts holding the lower unit on and the pump will be looking at you.

Re: Belgium 4hp ? year and manual

Thanks Admiral !!!

I undid the 4 bolts at the prop end but it would not come off easily I assume the drive holds it on in some way ! So I did not force it.
Or do you mean just above the clamp which fits to the boat.
Us English are a bit slow at times.

The four bolts that hold the gear case onto the bottom of the leg.

Two shown as #33 and #35 in THIS DIAGRAM

It is probably the top of the drive shaft stuck in the crankshaft.

We English .... slow at times..... you speak for yourself! I'm slow all the time.
