Bell housing Alpha I Gen II flange?

I was preparing to replace my u-joint bellows and reading manual #14 (picture page 4A 8)- the groove on the bellows is supposed to fit into a flange on the inside of the bell housing. Problem is - my 2000 Alpha I Gen II bell housing does not have a flange. The inside is smooth - also no sign of damage (rough jagged edges indicating breakage). Is this possible? Anyone seen anything like this?

Mercruiser 5.0 EFI, Alpha I Gen II 1.47

Thanks, Mike

It has to have that ridge where the bellows attaches, or there is no way to keep the bellows on.

Post a picture looking into the bellhousing.

You do have that ridge, marked with green arrows.

thanks for marking. Is that all that it requires? It is literally barely perceptible by touch

Once you get the bellows locked around the groove, you have to put that metal sleeve in to prevent the bellows from pulling off of it.

Is that all that it requires?
They have been working like that since 91.

Re: Bell housing Alpha I Gen II flange?

I have not taken off the bell housing - I'm waiting for my hinge pin removal tool. I just took pictures looking from the inside out and I think that the groove and flange did break off. It looks clean from the outside - but looking from the inside it looks like there is damage.

Thanks for the help - I'll be safe and get a new bell housing (nice one used E-Bay for $325)

That brings up an interesting question. Do most people use bellows adhesive on the bell housing side? The manual does not.
