Hello all,

I have a 1981 Mercruiser 3.7L on my Sea Ray. I have a few questions:

I am aware that this is the dreaded 470 motor - that's not my question...;)

My outdrive bellows need replacement. The shift, u joint and exhaust bellows are all cracked.

What outdrive do I have? How can I tell? What parts do I need to buy?

Where can I buy parts?

Should I worry about the driveshaft or shift cable being rusted?

Any tips for this replacement would be appreciated. I know I have to get the special tool for the sending unit pin.

Any advice from someone who's done this is appreciated! Thanks everyone.

Re: Bellows Replacement

You can buy the parts in a transom reseal kit, Sierra#18-2601-1, and you will need a tube of bellows adhesive, the factory service manual (downloadable from this site), and I would replace the shift cable( I always do on a transom reseal). You will also need a special tool for hinge pin removal. You have a Mercruiser 1 drive. Parts/tools can also be bought at this site. Have fun! 'nutcase

Re: Bellows Replacement

Nutcase,

Thanks for the reply. The kit you mentioned, 18-2601, indicates that it is for Mercruiser R, MR, ALPHA 1 (1983-90) S/N 6225577 & UP, ALPHA 1 SS (1986-89) S/N OA545004 & UP.

The kit 18-8205 is for Mercruiser I, R, MR, and Alpha I with exhaust tube. Would this be the right one?:confused:

The picture below is the outdrive. Thanks again! :)
