Belt Question For Mercruiser 5.7

Hi everyone,

I need some help with the belt selection for a 5.7 truck engine that I have converted for marine use.

It has a power steering pump, water pump and alternator. I pulled all the brackets of my old 5.0 Mercruiser and that engine did NOT have a serpentine belt.

I'm still building the engine, but I've attached a pic to show you the layout of the accessories (I'm installing the harmonic balancer pulley this weekend).

Can I use any, regular car belts? If so, can anyone help out with the part numbers?

Thanks in advance.

I replaced my belts with belts from an auto store. Don't know if there's any difference. I got two sets while I was at it and so have spares on board.

take your 5.0 belts to the auto-parts store and get new ones

make sure you use the marine circulating pump vs the one from the truck

depending on the truck year, you may need to change the core plugs to brass and the head gaskets to marine too

Hi everyone,

Thanks for responding. I can confirm that the marine water pump is on, the freeze plugs are all brass and the head gaskets are for a marine application.

The belts on the other engine were cut, removed and thrown out as they were very perished. I probably should have kept them but as I was/am trying to keep the work area clean, they were put in the trash.

The 5.0 was a 1995 non-Vortec headed engine. The replacement is an in-between year model from a 1987 cast. I found that out when I tied to install a 1986-1995 compatible the intake but the bolt holes that are near the carburetor mount didn't line up. So, I had to return it and order a different part that had a slightly different offset to the bolt holes, which lined up perfectly.

Thanks again everyone, your help is greatly appreciated!

Your not making it easy

Look on the block below the distributer and give us the casting number, look for a 7 digit number

I had an 88 Pontiac that had those angled intake bolt holes in the middle of the heads. Oddball stuff for sure. Wrap a piece of rope around your pulleys and measure it before you head to an auto parts store.

as far as SBC head and intake bolts go, there is the perimeter bolt heads where all the bolts are angled (1955-1985), including the center, the center-bolt non-vortec heads where the center 4 bolts are at a different angle (1986-1995), and the center-bolt vortec heads (1996 and up)

aftermarket intakes have slots to allow either application for the non-vortec stuff. factory ones are year specific.

Ayuh,.... Do ya still have the serial number from the original motor,..??
It'll tell ya the accessory part numbers, when ya search that serial number,...

'n as Scott says,.... Chevy has used only 3 different intake bolt patterns on the SBC,....
From the '50s, through '85, all 12 bolts are perpendicular to the intake flange,....
'86 to '95, the 4 center bolts, turned perpendicular to the oil pan flange,...aka:, straight up, 'n down,...
'n of course, since '96, 'n the Vortec heads, the center 4 bolts aren't there at all,.....
