My starter turns and the bendix jumps up and locks in the flywheel. The starter shaft keeps spinning but the motor doesn't turn over. The motor is not locked down, I can turn it with my hand
Sounds like the bendex is bad. There is a clutch mechanism in the bendex that sounds like it's slipping. Try spraying some carb cleaner up inside the bendex. If that doesn't work, replace it.
