Re: Bent Bunks

fishinman take a look at this thread. He just redone his trailer. Look at his bunks in his finished project.

I am wondering if your boat is resting on the keel bunks enough to help support the weight of the boat.

wow that guys trailer looks nice lol. my trailer actually has more support and bunks on it than my dads 2300SR Maxum does. thats what i was sayin, lay the boards like that and it just sounds like a better idea to me. more area for the hull to slide on, and its plenty of support.

You could also add a few keel rollers to help support the weight as well.
Being a stern drive boat, there's a lot of added weight at the rear of that boat.
You could mount them with U bolts and it would probably also make launching and loading easier as well.

Re: Bent Bunks

is the boats hull 45 degrees? doesnt look like you needed to cut that steep of a chamfer on them. either add some bracing or angle the brackets so the bunks sit flat to the hull.

I think shizzy hit it.

The bunks were cut to 45*, you hull isn't at the same angle. Under weight, it pushed the bunks out 'till the surfaces lined up. Some stiffer brackets would have kept the bunks vertical, BUT all of the weight would be on the peak of the bunk instead of it's full width.

Recut the bunks to match your hull deadrise, and then upgrade to heavier brackets.

Re: Bent Bunks

i am having some brackets made with 45degree braces to keep them from bending out. one on each side. the only problem is now the wood is warped. should i loosen the brackets(front and rear) and get the new brackets on there and tighten them down and see how that does or do you think i will have to get a new piece of lumber??? if so how much do you think that piece would cost?? it is like 3inx10inx8or 10ft. i know i would have to get that from saw mill, any pref on material? any certain wood?? I called Nextrail today to ask them, they were no help at all, i didnt even tell him what boat i had and just said it was to heavy for the trailer, and there was nothing i could do. The dry weight on this boat is 3250, 70gal tank. just to be sure, friday i am going to get it weighed down at the scale house, but i dont think there is anyway it weighs more than 6000 which is what the trailer is rated for.

Re: Bent Bunks

So, i finally got it fixed and would like to show you what i did. the bunk was warpped, before the front was straight up and down and the rear was warpped out wards. well after i got the new brackets, i loosened the front ubolts and the bolts going through the bunks, and then put the new rear outside bracket on and tightened the ubolts where it needed to be. i then put the inside one on and tightened the rear allthe way down, ubolts and cross bolts. that way it moved the warp to the front of the trailer and pointing in towards the boat. then tried tighting the front brackets together as much as possable and then the u bolts. so now the weight of the boat is sitting on the warp and straighting the bunk.

I took the boat to the water a week later and took it off the trailer and loosened the front all up and did it over again(just the front) tightened the outside where it needed to be and then the cross bolts and then the inside ubolts. it is about 1/2 there, i think in about 2 or 3 more trips it will be compleatly straightened out and good to go.

And by the way i had the boat weighed, and trailer, boat, a full tank of fuel( that is VERY rare to see that) and all my life jackets and flairs and all my usual junk it weighed in at 5630.

I included some pictures to describe what i did.

One more question, should i add keel rollers? and if they are not necessary then what would be the advantages??
