I've got quite the shimmy every now and them with my mercury '77 1150, and I realized one of the four plates on the top around the outside are curved upwards a bit while the other three brackets/plates are all straight? Is this normal?

Re: Bent flywheel bracket?

Are you refering to the tabs of metal where a knotted rope can be hooked to rope start the engine?

This, not sure if it's a bracket or what the name is for it, there's 4 of them on top of the flywheel(?) and one of them is not flat, but bent/rounded upwards so I'm wondering if that's causing my shimmy/shake....
Wondering if this is by design, or somehow it got bent and is causing the entire engine to shake quite a bit.

(I've had it lynced and synced, new plugs, new plug wires, new distributor cap, fuel system cleaned, idle mixture/timing set, compression checked)

Re: Bent flywheel bracket?

Those are supposed to be flat plates. However, I doubt that is causing your issue.

Re: Bent flywheel bracket?

Any ideas then Chris1956? I'm at a loss..
I bring up the bent plate because it almost looks like those are there for balance/harmonics of the flywheel itself, and it does seem like the shake/shimmy originates from the top of the engine, but it's really hard to tell....

Check to see if the whole flywheel isn't slightly cockeyed. These flywheels are like Flexplates, as top of them are sheet metal with ring of metal bolted at the edge. The bent tab may have happened in a past attempt to remove the flywheel by someone prying up.

Re: Bent flywheel bracket?

Well I somewhat bent the piece back down a little bit but I can't see any difference.. rats! heh

But the flywheel does appear to be spinning uniform as the top is concerned, but the plate difference is better, no change from what I can tell..

I tried to get it on video with my phone but with how low resolution it is I can't really see the shake. If I were to measure the shake laterally, it's probably a shift back and forth up to 1/4-1/2".

I know I saw someone mention in a video that these motors (tower of power series) never really idles smoothly like the current generations of motors? Not sure how much stock I want to put into that statement, but I want to be sure it's not something affecting long term life of the motor.

Re: Bent flywheel bracket?

When you say shake, a bit of a twisting motion? back and forth?

I've seen them idle so smoothly, except for the noise it was hard to tell they were running
