hey gary, do you know how the shift rod in the upper unit attaches to the shift cable??? I've been looking at pictures and cant figure it out. Im still wondering if it might be possible to remove the lower unit w/o removing the whole drive. It seems like the only thing making it require a whole outdrive removal is that dang shift rod/cable.

Rowlex, you need a oem manual. Search ebay. You can't do anything right, with out it.

coors: i purchased a manual yesterday however in reading the removal of the sterndrive/lower unit it doesnt say anything about the shift cable where it attaches to the outdrive. Other then saying turn it 90* to port so the lower unit can drop out with it attached.

The manual also says it is possible to remove the lower unit without removing the entire outdrive. But then at the lower unit removal section it says the entire outdrive 'should' be removed to pull the lower unit....

Having to deal with the cable is further in; what manual are you looking at?

the clymer one its all they had and i want to pull this drive/lower unit tonight so i can get onto ordering parts tommorow...

edit: I guess the cable per say is not what i think i need to be concerned about its the linkage that connects to it? If you look at post #13 the diagram i posted it would be the component set #79, looks like it connects to some sort of pin.

My book says, put in neutral, pull 6 nuts; support and yank.

yep mine says the same, i was just trying to figure out if its possible to just pull the lower unit and not the upper. a way to disconnect the upper shift linkage is the only thing hindering that goal.

The upper and lower are a unit

Re: bent prop shaft replacement help!

I think what you want to do is split the upper & lower? It can be done as I did it once on my 3.0 Cobra. But, it's a major pain getting the 2 halves back together. You will definately need help, as the halves do not come apart or go back together easily. I think the part you refer to is the shift rod. You can turn #77 to get it out of the way, but doing so will throw off the height adj. of the shift rod, causing all kinds of problems with the shift mechanisms. You're better off pulling the whole drive. Good luck.

Ok guys,The cable attaches to the bell crank inside the gimbal housing.Dont worry about any cable disconnect. The bellcrank fits into a V in the top of the shift rod.
The only thing is setting the nuetral shift adjustment when putting the drive back on.Precise measurments are critical for the shift cable adjustments.
Throw that Seloc book in the toolbox and get the REAL manual before you put the drive back on..

Re: bent prop shaft replacement help!

Thanks for the info guys, I got the outdrive pulled off, seperated the two halfs and just yesterday got the entire prop shaft stuff out. Now its time to buy new parts! yay :p

do you guys know if the pinion bearing is pressed in?? When I removed the pinion gear all the bearings (cylinders) from the pinion bearing fell out and im not sure what to do about that...

Oh also one more thing... I had never checked this before but after the prop hit ground i pulled/pushed the prop forward and backward (with the boat in neutral) and was able to get some forward/backward movement, should it be able to move or be solid??
