I have a 120 Merc. with a three blade prop. I recently hit something with one blade which slightly bent the tip of one blade forward about 3/8". Only about 1" of the blade was affected. I feel a vibration only at very low speed now. I know this cannot be good for the berrings. There was no loss of material to the blade. Can I heat the blade and bend it back or do I need to have it done by a pro. for perfect balance?????<br />Additionally, is now a good time to go to a stainless (perhaps 4 blade)prop. and keep this one as a spare? Thanx in advance

Re: Bent Prop

Mcat, You can use a propane torch to heat the bent blade and tap it gently with a hammer to straighten it. It probably will not break, but be careful. However, this kind of damage usually does not cause the prop to be out of balance. I would check the rubber hub for damage. If it is still out of balance, a prop shop can assist.

Use 2 hammers, large one and smaller one. Use the large one for a backing and tap gently with the small one, suprisingly(?) how much it will bend and you can take it right back to the orginal shape. If you still get vibaration, you will need to send it to a shop for balance. Gently is the word!

Re: Bent Prop

Thanx guys. I used both methods together. Someone held the torch while I used the hammers. Worked like a charm. Seems to be in perfect balance. Thanx again.
