I have a 79 v-4 100 horse Evinrude that I think has a bent propshaft. It looks like it wobbles a little when spun by hand. I am not having any vibration or problems with seals. I have owned this boat for a year and have not hit anything, so it has been like this for a while. The last time I change the lu fluid I had metal shavings on both lu plugs. If I need to replace the lu, which year and horsepower lower units will interchange with this motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Bent propshaft

ccstac,
Wobble is not good.Pull the prop and hold a guide of some sort close to the chaft and spin it by hand. There should be no wobble.
Shavings may be wear from clutch dog which does happen in the course of use. Be sure the motor
is at lowest idle possible when shifting and
you shift with a crisp sure movement.Dont mash
it in and dont drag it in to slowly.

Hi ccstac....

Sometimes the shaft may appear to wobble depending where you look. But like steelspike said, check it out with good stright edge or if you have access to a dial indicator, this would be better. The shavings you saw when you drained the oil, were the long shavings or wee little sparklers or flakes?

Jim

Forgot to add somethin'...(just finished up a midnight shift)

Seeing the wee little tiny sparklers in the oil can happen if it had been a while since the last oil change. What did the oil look like?

Jim
