My shop just called and told me I have a bent rod and that it means my entire powerhead is trash...$4,500 repair!!

Is replacing my entire power head the only option?

Do you know somewhere I can get a good deal on a used/new power head?

Is it worth the repair?

Thanks!!!

You need to find a new repair shop for starters, a bent rod is no reson to replace a powerhead.

The guy is telling me that I need a new crank shaft, rings, bearings, and gaskets, with labor and the rebuild I may be better off buying the new power head.

I found one here (iboats) for $2,600 with $450 core refund.

He says my lowest cylinder is pumping out more water than the damn on the lake.

The guy use to work for Mercury/Mariner, could he really be that far off?

Again, a bent rod does not necessarily warrant a new power head. You have been told all the parts that need replacement but you have not been told WHY!!!! The rod connects the piston to the crankshaft (hence the name connecting rod). If the connecting rod bearing went out due to wear or lack of lubrication, then the crankshaft could have been damaged. If the engine was overheated then a gasket failure could be the cause for water leakage. So the logical questions to ask is how did the rod get bent and what's the water leaking from?. What happened in the engine to warrant a new crank. The crank has nothing to do with water flow in the engine. Water flow out of the engine where it is not supposed to be coming out is an issue but may be as simple as a blown water cover gasket. You need to ask a lot more questions and get some reasonable answers besides "these parts need replacement".
