Best 7.5 to 10HP 2-stroke Small Outboard ever made?

Very subjective question. I'd like everyone to chime in and give an opinion.

What is the best 7.5 to 10HP small outboard short shaft ever made from both a dependability and replacement parts still are available standpoint. This includes strong aftermarket support for parts.

Before you give an opinion, let's give a couple of variables:

1. 2 stroke
2. short shaft
3. Tiller
4. Non-pressurized tank
5. Under 75 lbs

No brainer... Johnson or Evinrude 9.9 70's - 90's vintage.

My vote would be for the Johnson as well. I own a 1966 mq12a 9.5 hp. 2 stroke Johnson that up until 4-5 weeks ago had not been started for the past 15 or so years. I put some gas in the tank, installed the fuel line, pumped up the fuel bulb and pulled the rope. Darn it, it did not start on the first pull, but, it did on the 2nd pull and runs great. We have had it on the lake 8 times in the last 3 weeks and not a problem one. (Knock on wood) Good luck. Jim

Hard to beat teh OMC products but I would throw in with the Merc/Mariners from the late 90's/early 2000's mainly because they had the shift in the throttle. I found this unique feature to be worth it's weight in gold when running my 14' skiff (w 96' 15 hp merc, 74#).

The E/J 7.5 and 10 hp. Dependable,smooth,reasonably quiet,simple to work on
and a vast supply of new and used parts. dating back circa. 54.For pure speed the Merc 10 Hurricane from the 50s.
