Want to replace my broken trim sender. Volvo sx drive. The oem one is a little overpriced. But looking on Amazon there is a few aftermarket ones to pick from. Just wondering who's bought what and were you happy ? Thanks for any help

I was quoted 280 eur (thats well over 300 bucks) for the OEM for DPS-A. Also looking for the alternatives.
As a sidequestion, is it possible to replace the sender without pulling the drive? I cant figure how it could but maybe there are some tricks.

Well I don’t have a Volvo but....with the OMC Cobra (similar design to Volvo SX) my OE trim senders lasted about 1 1/2 to 2 seasons max (salt water moorage)...When they became NLA I installed a Sierra one in 2010 and....it still works! So if they make one you might try theirs.

I bought 2 off of Amazon that had the highest reviews.... they were never quite right and one quit in the first year. So much for the reviews.

I have seen OEM's suffer the same fate - hence why I tried no-name ones.

I'm either going to try another no name, or implement what my late father wanted to do. He was a hydraulic engineer and wanted to install rotary cylinders in series with one side of the hydraulic feed to the outdrive cylinders. They would simply go along for the ride and could be used to report the position of the outdrive cylinders. They would be mounted in the bilge and I could then hook up any potentiometer to them.

If Sierra makes one I'd try that. What I found on the Cobra units is that the shaft that turns the potentiometer gets sticky and sticks in one position, a little bit of back and forth movement and lubrication with Boeshield or similar and it works fine again. Before condeming the one you have get someone to watch the dash gauge while you move it through its travel.
The funny thing is I was going through my spare parts bin (when you have an OMC you always have a collection of spare parts because you can't just go out and buy many items) I found an OE sending unit I bought and never used, because the Sierra unit as lasted so long.

Buy the OEM one. Don't waste your time with aftermarket ones.
