As Paul mentioned, Ebay is a good source for the manuals. There are always lots of OMC manuals for sale at any given time. Though it may take a little while to find a specific one for a specific model/year. If you can wait, you can save $. I have bought several manuals this way usually for $10-$15. But, if you need it now... you need it now.

EBay. Good source of obscure parts and manuals that OMC otherwise charges too much for (sorry OMC).

By connecting people together, the internet has really cut into the pricing power of people selling niche market stuff/info.

Well I got my service manual from Ken Cook today. I am happy with the content but can't say the same about the physical piece. Basicly it is 300 pages of copy paper, not bound but hole punched. I guess for $80.00 I was expecting an actual book? Good news is there is more info then I will ever need for my old motor. Cant wait to get her on the water. Thanks for all the great contacts!!!

Rock, I would think you would have gotten an actual book too! The one I got for $40 looked like the original service book, paperback but bound with colors and everything? Good luck with the motor!

87 Aggie... I must have an odd year/HP as far as texts go. No one had this thing? I did find out that the reason they charge so much for what I got was because it is a manual for every HP for that year. The thing is 2" thick! I decided now that I have this book I will start collecting 1983 Johnsons from 2 thru V6 models... Have to say after spending some time going through it it IS nice to have the OMC manual even if it is a copy.

Hey Rock! Does that manual have seperate sections for different HP engines, or is it spread out all over the book? If so I have a 1983 90hp Johnson. Wanna sell that part?

Dave

Just my opinion of 45 years wrenching stuff.
#1 Factory Manual (buy and sell with the boat)
#2 Seloc. Dealer, Google, or ebay
#3 Ancient chinese writing found in cave
#4 Anything sold by Clymer, but if you finally decide just what picture or diagram is the one you need, don't blame them for forgetting to tell you of the left hand thread on the crank you just destroyed trying to get the nut off. I have one Clymer Harley manual that makes zero sense in some parts, and I do those motors blindfolded. Just my 2 cents

At one point in time OMC had a separate manual for each horse power. Then around 1981 thru maybe 1985 or so they had one manual cover all horse power. After that they went to grouping similar motors into similar groups in separate manuals.

Kencook is the only place to get reprints of these manuals, and while the format may leave something to be desired, they have copies of the original factories.

The other source,as said previously is Ebay, where you may find an original manual.

I just find aftemarket manuals lacking, and worse than that for newcomers to boating.

DHP

Dave... Manual is broken into section then each section is broken into models and some sub-sections cove all models... Or portions of models. You could pull out particular HP but it would not be that easy. If I was not in a hurry I would would watch ebay like others suggested. Otherwise sounds like Ken Cook is the place to go.

I bought my Evinrude/Johnson Service manual and Owners manual from the local dealer in Mt Arlington NJ. I don't have the receipt for the Owners manual, but the Service Manual (40 thru 55 hp) receipt is dated 10/27/2003 and cost $29.25 plus tax.

Thats right, $29.25 plus tax from the dealer. I paid $40 for the Seloc which is accurate, but not as good.

Go to the dealer and order the service manual for your engine. Bring the model number so you get the exact correct manual for your year/model engine. Page 4 of the Service Manual lists exactly which model numbers by HP the manual covers. That way, you know the information is correct for your motor, and not a "one manual covers all o/b motors from 1940 to 2005" type manual.

In addition, the manual is pre-punched to fit 3 ring binders. The black & white photos are clear and of the year motor covered by the manual and don't have that washed out look like the Clymer and Seloc photos.

Mark.
