The boat is a 1986 byliner 2950 with a Volvo 260a 5.7 and a Volvo 280 drive. The manual says there are three ways to do it and the preferred way is removing the upper gear assembly from drive, removing 6 bolts on a retaining ring inside the bellows and then it is free from the drive.

How hard is it to remove from inside just removing it from the drive housing? Book says there are 3 bolts that are very difficult to remove and the method above is preferred.

I can see drive bolts frozen, torch out, pen lube all over my hands.....

Anyways, got the new, more powerful replacement from Rapido. Based on what I have read here they are good and very helpful.

Thanks guys, any help is much appreciated, including problems I will run into swapping over the parts to the new long block!

It is not very difficult to remove the upper drive housing, really. I recommend following the procedure in the manual.
