Best Flushing Ear Muffs? Mine aren't working

I spent hours tracking down the reason my Tell-Tale stream was not there. Water pump/impeller were fine, hoses were all clear, etc. Finally I put a 55-Gal. drum under the motor with water and it worked fine. (My hose water pressure seemed fine).
I'm wondering if anyone has some tips or hints on better muffs, or clamping them down or such?
Here's a pic of the ones I am using (came with the boat).

Are you sure there isn't some obstruction in the muffs themselves? Do they completely cover the water entry ports?

The way those hoses are set up looks nice, but the lines are thin and If there is not a whole lot of pressure behind it they likely do not provide enough water. This can happen when the water is from a well instead of public supply.
It would be a good idea to invest in a simple set that has a bigger passage on one side that can supply enough water and pressure to the pump. Of course it is always important that the muffs completely cover the intake holes and make sure that the faucet is wide open.

If they are old or have had to much time in the sun the rubber muff bits can harden up and wont deform to seal around the gearcase .....do you have a lot of water squirting out from under the muffs ?
