Hello everyone, I rescently purchased a 1987 raycraft bass boat, its in mint shape all around just some of the carpeting is coming up off the floor. I want to replace all the carpeting but I was wondering what is the best glue to use for this application?, and can I apply it right over the old glue left over or do I need to sand it all down and then apply the glue?

You need to prepare the surface by cleaning it. There are proper adhesives at Home Depot for adhering the carpet to the (wood?) floor. Available in the carpeting section

sorry I should have been more clear, my floor is fiberglassed under the carpet, thats why i asked if I should sand it down a bit to give it something to adhere to or if it should be put on top of the old glue.

im in the upholstery bussiness and have installed dozens of boat carpets. its not necesarry to clean all the glue up and sand the floor. just get what u can up, make sure there arent any lumps that will show through the new carpet your laying down, get you a cheap spray gun from harbor freight. get some good contact adhesive, if you have a local upholstery shop that works on cars/boats, you can get some from them cheap possibly. spray away, lay er down.

With any glue down carpet the surface has to me smooth enough to allow a trowel to go over the old glue and apply enough adhesive to make the new stuff stick. Perfectly smooth is not really necessary, but alot of ridges in the old glue will cause problems for sure. Hit the old stuff with 12 grit buffer.

Those are all great tips, I will be trying all of them and looking into a place where I can find a good adhesive so i don't have my carpet coming up on me again.

Re: Best glue for carpeting

The outdoor carpet adhesive from HomeDepot is great. Once it is fully cured, there is nothing going to separate it from the carpet or floor. Don't get it wet for at least 5 days after installing.

I just re-did my fiberglass floor this summer. Ripped out the old flooring and very quickly (36grit flap disk on an angle grinder) ground off some of the worst ridges of old adhesive and any loose flakey stuff. Vacuumed it thoroughly then washed/scrubbed with a solution of TSP and hot water. Rinsed well with clean water and let dry.

Did all the pre-fitting and cutting to size first, then folded the carpet over in half. Spread out the glue according to instructions then waited about 15min to let it "tack up" a little. Had to do this because my carpeting extends up the sides of the boat as well, and if I just layed the carpet right away it would just fall away from the vertical sides. Don't let the glue skin over, it has to have a wet surface.

Layed the carpet back down and rolled firmly into place. The rolling is an important step. You have to spread the glue into the fibers of the carpet backing. Repeated the same procedure for the last half of the carpet.

Be VERY careful not to any glue on the 'good' side of the carpet. In my experience, it is impossible to remove even though the instructions say fresh spills can be cleaned up with warm soapy water. The only thing I found that really works is "Goof Off" solvent after the glue has dried. If you try to remove spilled glue when wet, all it does is spread it around in a larger area.

I used the same product and technique 5 years ago when installing carpeting on new trailer bunks. Carpet was glued to pressure treated 2x4's and is just as stuck today as it was 5 years ago.

It was VERY thin and runny and didn't do a very good job gluing the carpet down. THe bond has failed in numerous places on my boat.

Re: Best glue for carpeting

I just ripped the carpet out of a boat last night, the owner had installed it about 20 years ago with automotive spray trim adhesive and Liquid nails around the edges. It was so adhered that I had to grind and sand away even some of the old carpet that stuck and tore away. No amount of force would break the bond. It was that old blue green indoor outdoor carpet with a super heavy backing. (It wasn't worn, it was just that the boat was red and white and that carpet combo was really ugly in that boat). It took me all day to remove it and get the floor cleaned up. The worst part was getting it out of the gunwale compartments and off the side panels. They covered everything with it. When I was done I had a pickup full of old carpet and the whole yard was covered with blue/green streamers from torn carpet.

I need to replace my carpet and when removing it it appears that it was original installed with spray adheasive/glue. I like the simplicity of that application. Any suggestions, recomendations? What type adheasive?
