Any extreme pressure grease in the wheel bearings.I use the Johnson-Evinrude grease in the tube...i bought about 5 of them for a good price. Its red and tacky..
The blue Triple Guard grease on everything else.(it is really waterproof)

Re: Best grease

You need marine grease to hold up to the extreme moisture they are subjected to. make SURE it is marine grease. if not, you're kinda wasting your time in my opinion cause youre gonna have to re-do it soon after w marine grease.

Ayuh,... You can do whatever you Please,...
But,....
If I repack my bearings with axle Grease that doesn't say Marine on the package,...
I won't be redoing them, nor will I loose any sleep over it....

If you allow water into the hubs,... Any grease will wash out,.. Including Marine grease....

Re: Best grease

oh man! im stupid. i bought the 3 3.5 oz quicksilver grease pack and a standard grease gun for 14 oz tubes. what a waste of money, and now i cant return it because the receipt is long gone.

anyone want to buy the grease? haha

Just spoon and putty knife the grease directly into the gun without the cardboard tube, it works just as well.

Re: Best grease

I use a tub of Yamaha marine grade on my prop shaft since that's what my local mechanic uses at the dealership. My trailer has oil bath hubs so no need to grease the bearings. Not too sure of the advantage or disadvantage over packed bearing hubs. Part of my routine is to make sure the oil level hasn't changed and there is no visible oil on the wheels.

Re: Best grease

yeah thats top o the line stuff from what i hear. walmart stuff is about $3 a tube i think. also, i tore my hubs apart and started fresh and packed bearings and everything, i bought 2 tubes just in case. i used just about every bit of 1 tube for both hubs on a single axle trailer, fyi.

I would have no doubt whatsoever if I were told that the 2 greases (QuickSilver and Wally-World) were produced and packaged right on the same assembly line, and the only difference was the name on the tube, and the price. Lots of products are that-a-way. I'm just sayin....;)
... but you're right on the marine rated grease... I second that. And there IS a difference.
Not all greases are the same.

Re: Best grease

good thinking!

how do you know how much grease to put in the wheel bearings?

If you have the bearing buddys you just pump the grease till the cup raises and pushes against the spring. if you have sure lube hubs you go till grease comes out the vent port, if your just packing them by hand you pack till the all the air is removed from the cage. typicaly though you pump grease till it begins to ooze out the outer seal, at least thats how I've done it for years.

Ayuh,... And that would be What,..??

Grease by it's very nature is Waterproof....
If Water enters the hub,+ contaminates the Grease,... The bearings will Rust,+ Pit...
Regardless of the Grease used...

I'm sorry, Bond-o...
There is a difference. The difference is marine grease is formulated to withstand washout. It has additives to make it stickier, so to speak, in the presence of water. It has certain properties that keep water from becoming entrained in the grease. not all greases are made this way. I've been in an industrial environment for many years, and I know grease. It's also not ok to mix different types of grease in the same bearing or fitting. You can do as you see fit, but I'm just stating the facts. Grease is not waterproof. No grease is. Marine grease has help to deal with it, though. That's all I'm getting at. I didn't mean to come off as snotty, if I did.

Re: Best grease

Withstand and not "stop" are the key words here. If water gets in and stays in it will start the corrosion process regardless of the grease that is used.

Ayuh,.... I can't argue your points....
Mine is, that Most of the posters here at iboats will never see the various greases We might see....
I've never seen a Failure that could be atributed to Mixing greases,...
Atleast nothing that everyday Joe is going to have access to....

1 of the Most Common questions around here is what Color grease to use....
In the Wally World Grease Dept.,... Color is a marketing tool, not a grease Identifier...
And,...
I wouldn't hesitate to mix,+ match Any of the greases at Wally World...

Re: Best grease

I am by no means a "Grease Expert" BUT as an aircraft engineer, I have had to perform multiple grease research projects. Their are two main differences in grease, the base component and thickeners. Things like clay, calcium soap and lithium are thickeners with the bases being mineral , synthetic or both. Additives such as molybdenum disulphide can make a grease perform in a wider range of tasks. The additives and bases have to be compatible with the seals and metals they contact as well as the enviroment they operate in. Some operate better at low temps and will wash out when heated or some only work well at high temps and are too thick to provide lubricity at cooler temps. The "Right Grease" is the one you choose based on reading the label. Usually you dont want to use a clay thickened grease on a surface exposed to high moisture but it might be just the thing for a dry enclosed area. If its rated to NLGI 2 and water resistant you should be good to go just remember none are waterPROOF!

Nicely put. I hope everyone understands it.

Re: Best grease

I Dont have any marine grease so i just use multipurpose grease and apply it often. I never see any water in it when i apply more so it must be working.
Matt (better then nothing until i get marine grade)

Wynns ultra-synth, it stands up in boom pins in heavey duty equipment, it stands up in wheel bearings in an oval track car, it has worked in my boat trailer bearings for 10 years with out any failures,so thats what I use:D
