Ok....here it is. Let's see if I have learned anything.

Problem:

After a 10 minute run today (varied between 3/4 and WOT) when I brought it back to idle it would not idle. If I kept it above 2000 or gassed it it would keep running. Changed fuel/water separator and got it running enough to get back to the dock. It ran on plane just fine...no stumble nothing. When I brought it back to idle at the dock it would idle, but as soon as I gave it gas (from neutral) it sputtered, but would keep running after a hesistation.

New plugs about 10 hrs ago....I am on the bottom half of a fresh tank of fuel (ethanol treatment added). New fuel pump within last 20 hrs....Temp is good, voltage is good, oil pressue is good, oil level is good and clean.

I am guessing I need a carb rebuilt and that my float is gummed or my "idle circuit" is messed up (whatever that is).

Am I on the right path?

Thanks!

That's where I'd start..... You did check compression?

Re: Best Guess: Carb Rebuild Needed?

Compression was good when it was checked last spring. Timing was checked and found to be fine too. I noticed several times this season it would start awesome, idle well cold, I would run it...then sometimes it would surge at idle after a run...and other times it ran like a watch. It seems to always have its issue after I run it for a bit (10 mins on plane). The issue until today was just a surge of idle RPM of 200 or so. The more and more I think about it and talk about it, my carb must be loaded with trash.

An intermittent problem like that does sound like dirt in the carb....

i would inspect for a vaccum leak. check around the carb and intake for a hissing sound . sounds like it is sucking air to me
