Randy Rhodes was probably the best in many ways for me......but hey Im an old metal head.......Stevie Ray was the best in his style.......Modern day rockers Vai and Satrani both are pioneers in there own time. I could go on and on.......Hard to define the best ever. Also often the best guitar players get very little reconition due to the average music listener wont be exposed to their playing....

Being a guitar teacher I have to have an open mind...........I never even heard blue grass music till I moved here 3 1/2 years ago....Now I have to teach it........I have heard way to many amazing guitar players that I could not stand listening to and yet have to give props to........My Favorite guitar player is David Baxley A friend and a Pastor at a church I used to be on the worship team with......He was simply so tasteful and yet it was awesome.......

How about still at it? Alvin Lee..Tens Years After...Captain "Quickfingers"...just made a TERRIFIC album, with many greats (like Scotty Moore..Elvis's old guitar player..)
Best damn album I have heard since the Woodstock days...yep does a remake of "I'm Going Home"..
Google "Alvin Lee Back in Tennessee"...catch a taste

Also vote for Jimmy Page. Hendrix for uniqueness. Honorable mention for Clapton. I saw one of the young guns on guitar the other day and he wasn't too shabby - John Mayer.
