Re: Best Hopes for Abby Sunderland !!!!!!

Her brother did the trip. He started a 16 and finished at 17.
Her parents should be proud and relieved.

Proud for their competent and ambitious daughter.
Relieved that the safety backups worked.

My only question was if they/she pushed too hard for a record and pushed the bad conditions in the Indian Ocean.

Re: Best Hopes for Abby Sunderland !!!!!!

I feel I should point out that this child is far from being rescued.
This is the Southern Ocean and that French Fishing Boat has to get to her yet.
Lets be clear, there are 3 rescue craft involved, spaced apart, each has the role of backing-up or supporting the other.
The long-haul chartered Qantas Airbus A330 jet that left Perth early Friday - faced a 7600km round-trip from Perth to Sunderland's boat, which is near the limit of its range, and flew five hours to reach the area where the beacons were transmitting, then maneuvered for another hour before spotting the 13m yacht. In all, it hovered over the site for two hours.
I have an opinion, but will wait and see how this all pans out over the next 4 days.
Hopefully the child and her rescuers will all survive.
In 5 hrs we will know a little more.
Cheers
Phillip

If you look at her website that does not seem to be the case. It was "her" dream and she has thousand's of hours experience sailing off the California coast. She was well aware of the perils of the Indian Ocean and (thankfully) had the right boat to deal with it.

What a great story.

Re: Best Hopes for Abby Sunderland !!!!!!

Can you guys believe the crap her parents are getting now!!!!!!!!!!

These people had nothing to say when she left but now that something happens people are calling for their arrest!

The public needs to keep their concentration on their own kids (who are porb out robbing liqueur stores and doing drug while they critique others) and stop telling people how to raise there kids..........this girl will end up achieving more then half the public because her parents provide her with the chance to take on such adventures.

If the public would loosen up and help their kids follow their dreams as these people did I bet we wouldn't have half the issues with todays youth as we do!!

Sorry I had to vent, I hate when people get all up in arms about things that other people do with there kids. as long as they aren't beating the hell out of them dont interfere with someone else parenting!!!!
:eek::eek::eek::confused::confused:
If I comment on this I will probably get banned.
SO.....(almost) no comment.

It is a great story.
I just hope she/they didn't succumb to the pressure of making the record of "the youngest".

...and I just heard Geraldo's rant on this as I was posting.

SHE'S ALIVE

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/lost_sailor_found

Boat's broken, mast broken off by a rogue wave, knocking out the satellite phone, but she's alive and well.

Keel is sound, boat is floating high, and she will ride it out until a fishing vessel reaches her sometime tomorrow.

Now, if all those people who are jealous that this 16 year old girl has more of everything than all of them put together will just back off..........

Re: Best Hopes for Abby Sunderland !!!!!!

I am not sure all of you understand the situation at the moment.
I'll put money on it most of you have never heard of Cocos, and have little idea of why they have stationed 2 aircraft there for use in this rescue.
Lets assume you know where Maruritius is...then ask why they would be refuelling there.
The Southern Ocean is not a 'puddle' like the north Atlantic, and nobody flies over it and nobody except fools sails thru it.
This is a big op, and if things go wrong, then a lot of rescuers may have no way out.

From: AAP June 12, 2010 3:16PM
THE Australian Defence Force has deployed two aircraft to Cocos Island, in the Indian Ocean, to assist in the rescue of US sailor Abby Sunderland.
A French fishing boat was on its way to rescue Abby on Saturday afternoon, following a rescue crew making brief contact with the 16-year-old on Friday afternoon by air.
On Saturday afternoon the Australian Defence Force joined the rescue by deploying two Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C aircraft.
"If needed, one of the AP-3C Orion will fly to Mauritius to refuel and will then fly south and provide coordinating support for civilian ships that have responded to the yachtswoman's emergency beacons," a Defence spokesman said.
"Despite the fact that Abby Sunderland has been found, the Royal Australian Air Force has continued to deploy its AP-3C as a contingency.
"If required, the aircraft will also be able to drop emergency supplies to the yachtswoman."
A request for the Defence Force to assist in Abby's rescue was made by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Most important thing here is that she is safe!! She can chalk it down as another experience as it takes a lot of gut to do what she done so far. My kid would not do such a thing even if i have the $$$ to support them on a venture as this, which i don't have. :( All I have to say is good luck the next time and keep safe.

I see she is now on the French ship, heading home.

Still havent decided my position on this (and similar) voyages.

On one hand, these things usually help develop high tech devices, food, etc to enable such a long voyage in such a small ship.

On the other hand, its a shame that large amounts of money and resources are being spent to save one person needlessly. And the person/group responsible for the voyage will pay none of the rescue expenses.

Re: Best Hopes for Abby Sunderland !!!!!!

The sailboat racing community pretty much condemned this joke of a media stunt from the start. The boat was pile of junk. The girl was in no way skilled enough for this passage, and the timing (southern ocean in winter) was a death sentence.

That girl is very lucky to be alive, but she won't be getting much love from the racing community. Her brother visited my club on his "please give me money for talking about my round the world vacation" tour. I was not impressed. The more you learn about this family the more your skin begins to crawl.

These youngest 'round records need to be stopped. A European attempt actually was stopped last year and the child placed in protective custody when the parents of a 13yr old tried to market their kid to pad their bank account.

Re: Best Hopes for Abby Sunderland !!!!!!

The media company behind the reality show speaks.

From the front page of Sailing Anarchy:

Adventures in Sunderland

Magnetic Personality

STATEMENT FROM MAGNETIC ENTERTAINMENT

In the Fall of 2009, Magnetic Entertainment ("Magnetic") first met with the family of Abby Sunderland to discuss the possible production of a reality show. The parties then entered an agreement to develop such a show based on the Sunderland family and the upcoming voyage around the world by their daughter Abby. Thereafter, in November of 2010, Magnetic signed an agreement with Reveille, a production company, to shop the show to a television network. From day one, Magnetic and Reveille hoped for a compelling story, but above all else, for Abby to return home safely.

When Abby's journey ran into trouble in Cabo San Lucas in March 2010, however, Ted Caloroso--DP and EP of the potential show--witnessed what he believed to be a lack of preparation, lack of training, and an overall disregard for the safety of Abby by the Sunderland family. Accordingly, both Magnetic and its corporate partner in the endeavor, Reveille, determined it was necessary to terminate the project at that time in an effort to discourage the Sunderland family from continuing to put Abby at risk. Nevertheless, Abby's journey continued.

Since news of Magnetic's development deal with the Sunderland family has come to light in recent days, there have been a number of inaccurate statements made by Laurence Sunderland, Abby's father, with respect to the series of events leading up to Magnetic's decision to terminate the project. First, Mr. Sunderland's claim that the he backed out of the project is untrue; representatives at both Magnetic and Reveille will confirm that it was their decision to terminate the project in March 2010.

Second, Mr. Sunderland claimed on "Larry King Live" on June 14, 2010 that Mr. Caloroso had a "vendetta" against the Sunderland family and that Mr. Caloroso actually hoped that Abby would "perish" on her journey. While such an outlandish claim would normally not dignify a response, the fact that Mr. Sunderland's claims were made on national television force Magnetic and Mr. Caloroso--the father of a young daughter himself--to deny that Mr. Caloroso ever made such a statement or that he ever wished that any harm would come to Abby. As with the rest of the Magnetic team, Mr. Caloroso could not be more pleased that Abby was found alive and well, and wishes her nothing but health and happiness in what is sure to be a dynamic future. While Magnetic decided to abandon the original project in March 2010, Magnetic retains all rights to its footage for future development based on the experience, and will donate a portion of any proceeds from this project to a fund for Abby Sunderland.

For further information about this upcoming project, please contact Christopher Bates at Magnetic Entertainment or Ted Caloroso at 23 South Productions.

Note: I don't recommend venturing into the forums at SA unless you have extremely thick skin and know what you're talking about. The sailboat racing world is very far removed from Jimmy Buffett tunes and drinks with umbrellas in them. They can smell BS from miles away and take great pleasure in demoralizing anyone who can't walk the walk and talk the talk. That said, if you can separate the wheat from the chaff, you will find some of the most experienced and hardcore sailors on the planet, including Vendee Globe, Volvo, and America's Cup vets.
