The reason you only get 17K out of your brakes is that the proportioning valve that distributes the brake fluid pressure between front and back is putting too much brake pressure to the front brakes. There was a TSB that corrects this problem. I had it done on my 99 454 3/4T Suburban.

Hmmm, bruce, I'll look into it. Thanks. 17.5k, with the way I drive is just beyond comprehension.

Dolluper, I'll check into the cross drilling. Thanks

Boom, you have yahoo mail.

Thanks RP, I got it. I will give my local Chebby dealer a holler. That could
certainly be the answer to the abbysmal brake pad wear. All gazillion pounds of that beast stopping with the front pads only.

Bet your rear brakes don't wear out too fast...do they?

My 02 Suburban brakes were a huge improvement over my 99 Suburban brakes. Before I sold it, I was really looking into getting aftermarket rotors becuase of the rotors warping. Of course the proportioning valve would probably help that problem too.

You are getting more out of your brakes than I was. I was getting 12K per set.

Still on the original shoes, bruce, at 44k. As far as I can tell, they are still at 75% or better.

Same went for my E-150 half ton. I run that thing at about the same weight as the 'burb. But it went to 218k on the original rear shoes. I only had to replace them because I had an axel seal let loose on the right side. They were down to about 25% however. Even in the heavily loaded E-150, the front pads last about 27k miles and I am still on the original rotors.

I now, both one the ford and the chev, adjust the rear brakes manually when I change front pads. Proportioning valve aside, self adjusters just do not work.

I also have a '91 Toyota Previa Jellybean van. It has discs on all four. Like clockwork, I change two front pads for every set of rear pads. Seems the proportioning valve was designed right for that vehicle.
