Best material for outboard cover

I've just bought a new 115 Yamaha, and as by boat lives outside, I want to buy/make a cover for the cowling. I don't mind having to take it off each time I go out; I just want something that will breath and protect it. Making one would be cool - I'm a bit skint after my latest purchase. With all the conflicting things I've been told, I've decided this is the best place to get some good information. Please help

Go to Army and Navy Surplus store and get an old Goretex jacket: breathable and waterproof <br /><br />Heck if you get the right size you could even wear it when on the water

A cheap, temporary fix, is to use a combination of an old T-shirt, and a cheapy tarp.<br /><br />Cover the cowling with the shirt (to protect the finish), and then cover the whole thing with one of those cheap plastic tarps. A couple elastic cords, and you're all set.

Down in Belize a lot of the shuttle boats are using Tshirts as well. You see a lot of Yammy tripple 250 setups all covered in the latest Tshirt fashion <br />They say it works great in the hot blazing sun.<br /><br />Nav

You could also look into a custom motor cover. I just puchased one from this web site. white tyveck building wrap works well to keep out dirt and water and still breath.

How about an all over wax and polish instead?<br /><br />According to the claims on some of the bottles, they're Rita proof!

Hi,<br />Just remember if it is bigger it is a slight risk the wind will make it chafe on corners on cowl for example.

Many mail order stores, and probably your local boat store, sell various sizes of outboard cover for around $15- breathable material, drawstring. E.g. Cabelas, Overtons, etc. I see that the iboats mega mall has "custom fitted" covers for more than that - actually made for your outboard, probably fit better. I found the cheaper ones (1) either fit well as-is or (2) are easy to make fit better, if necessary, with a sewing machine. I don't know how cheap, er, I mean price sensitive, you are, but for $15, I'd use a cover made for an outboard just becasue it looks better.

It covers your entire engine; not just the top end. I bought one for a Merc 115efi for $85.00. Money well spent considering the cost of outboards these days.
