Hello everyone, long time no talk, anyway. Spring is here and I am currently looking at 3 motors, only problem is I can't decide the best one for me, so I was wondering what everyone thinks I should do. The motors, all are in excellent or near excellent cond. They are a 1968 18hp Evinrude, a 1975 15hp Evinrude, and a 1985 20hp Evinrude. I have a 14ft aluminum that is rated for 20hp max and the boat weighs 180lbs dry, what do you guys think?

Thanks in advance,

All being in the same condition, the latest year model. It will also outperform the others by a bunch. ;)

The old 18 hp, 22-cuber is a workhorse engine design, was built for a long time and still lots around. Great motors. Has points, coils and condensers magneto. Good design but requires occasional maintenance.

The 15hp is also a solid design, great power to weight ratio, pretty quick on a light hull. Only about 13 cubic inches. Has a finicky low-tension magneto with the maker points..

The 20 is also a good design, based on the same 31.8 cui. block as the 35hp. It has a smaller carb and intake restriction to detune it. The extra cubes are a big help when lugging a boatload... Has CD Ignition. Very reliable system, low maintenance....

- Scott
