Re: Best Oil for 1988 60HP
do a search in these forums for TCWIII or TCW3. You will probably find that selection of oil is one of the most popularly debated topics.
My opinion as a recreational boater: any TCW3 rated oil will run your engine and you will never have any oil related problems. The dealer recommends the specific brand because he sells it. I have run everything from the absolute cheapest TCW3 to full synthetic TCW3 and can't say I've ever noticed a difference at all. Nowadays, I buy name brand oil, whichever is cheapest or more convenient. These are generally Quicksilver, Johnson/Evinrude or Castrol because they happen to be available close to my home, and I can get them for $3/quart or less, depending on who's got a sale going on. Although I'm not convinced they are actually better, I can afford them.
The only thing I've read about brand loyalty that I think is worth considering is that some people think synthetics cause less smoking and pollution and help their engines to run better. That is worthwhile if true and you should try it. It didn't make any observable difference to me.
I approach it like I approach oil in the car: I tend to gravitate towards certain oils, but really the choice of oil is of miniscule importance compared to simply using the proper oil in the proper amount. For a car, this means change regularly, for a boat, it means mix properly (or maintain oiling system) and don't forget.
You'll get a million opinions.
