What is the best or simple method to adjust the shift linkage, Johnson 1976, 85 HP, 85EL76? Once the coupler is disconnected to replace an impeller, what is the best or simplest method to reinstall to easily get reverse, neutral and forward? Is it a centering progress? I hope I am using the right terminology, ?Centering?, related to a friend?s motor vs mine.

I asked him if he wanted to ask a Tech questions related to the adjustment what would they be? His reply vs my questions above: ?what is the over all length of the shift rod, including the shift rod connector? I think If can adjust the shift rod connector to the proper length, then use the knob to adjust the gears."

Any Pic attachments and all will be a big assistance. Thanks In Advance! jow

There is a specific height measurement for the shift rod, as found in the original service manual. Usually this rod height is not affected when you change out the impeller. If you think you disturbed the shift rod and think it may be out of adjustment, you will need to adjust that rod per the factory spec height. Once the shift rod to the lower unit is adjusted properly, the gearbox should shift normally by hand (manually) when the gearcase is reinstalled. The remaining adjustment would be to the shift cable underneath the cowling. That is where you get into that "centering" thing and the adjusting nut at the cable end.

emdsapmgr , Thank You! Your info should help him very much. He has a manual and basically knows the correct height of his connector is off. I can pull a cotter and pin to avoid my coupler on my 1970 35 HP Chrysler. jow

Thanks for the help on the shift rod. A follow-up and closing on that matter. My friend gave it his best try w/o any success but found a shop that did. They managed to adjust it to allow him to shift gears and showed him that his system is worn badly. jow
