Let's open a can of worms and I'll ask...

What is the absolute best all-around 4-stroke on the market? 90-115hp range?

Categories are:

Lowest Noise
Fuel efficiency
Maint.
Lowest user problems

I've looked around the web and I cannot find an unbiased comparison anyplace.

If most popular equals best then it is Yamaha but I really don't think anyone makes a "bad" engine anymore and with all the cross branding you really have to dig to find out who actually made your engine, Tohatsu makes engines for other companies ect ect.

I would look more for the closest dealer, even the best engine will need serviced and if that si a 2 hour drive you really aren't much ahead.

Yamaha, Maybe most popular? or even with Mercury in popularity. Both have a vast dealer network for support.

Honda, Well the name pretty much speaks for itself in a good way.

Suzuki, One of the finest outboards you could ever place on a transome, Dealers are few and far between.

Then theres Nissan and Tohatsu Both are well reguarded in the mid range down to kickers.

+1 shop the dealer then the motor.

Best -- for what? You are asking for a compromise and any current 4-stroke meets that requirement. Parts availability? Probably Merc or Yamaha. Fuel economy? They are all the same. It takes so much fuel to make so much HP period. Reliability? Ask the guy whose engine died or experienced problems early on and it will be the worst engine ever. Ask another owner of the same brand who has had zero problems and it will be the best. The very fact you cannot find any data suggests that you pay your money and walk out with your engine -- any engine. Value for the money? Suzy!
