Best place to buy Volvo SX driveshaft with u-joints?

I have a 2006 Volvo 3.0L/SX. In the midst of replacing my gimbal bearing and u-joints I discovered that, well, apparently you CAN'T replace the u-joints. It baffles me that they would not sell the indidual joints and force you to buy the entire shaft assembly.

Are there any places that will rebuild your original shaft with new u-joints? If someone was able to start doing that they could make a killing.

So anyway, if there are indeed no alternatives, who has the cheapest price on the shaft assembly?

Volvo does still sell the ujoints seperatly, the part number is 3860232. But the SRP is still almost $150 each.
I wish I knew what would replace it.

I don't do volvo's but i can't imagine that you cant take that number and go to napa and cross it to a spicer ##.

Wow Don, that's very welcome news! I had seen numerous threads here talking about how you had to replace the entire shaft assembly, I guess those were older threads that weren't up to date? I have the "outside retainer" u-joints with the circlip on the outer face of each joint (see picture). When did they start offering the individual u-joints?

Now $150 is stupidly expensive for a u-joint (and this is coming from a guy who has had to buy Ferrari parts....talk about being robbed blind!!), but that is much better than $450 for the shaft and then paying a shop to install it (I wasn't going to attempt that at home).

As far as finding a substitution, has anyone tried just using the old-style volvo u-joints with zerk fittings? There is a wholesale bearing place here that can match just about any bearing known to man, but I will have to see it if they do u-joints as well. I will also call some auto parts places and see if they can cross reference that part number. I assume it is a volvo number?

I`ve only seen 2 types. Either snap rings on the inside like Merc or snap rings on the outside like yours.
Use a top quality U joint, greasable preferred and you`ll be fine.

Any idea if this is compatible? Attached is a picture....it looks like a match to me but I wanted to make sure before I order.
