I noticed that advanced auto sells resin, mat, etc. is there any advantage from buying from iboats or us composets?

I will be the very first one to say this....... BUY LOCAL and support your neighbor. There are plenty of things you will need from iboats in the future but keeping your neighbor in business is very important. ;)

I got all my glass and resin from the local boat store, Cost me a little more but made a huge impact on the way I am treated there and the discounts they throw my way. Not to mention I helped keep my buddy employed. I agree buy local, but if you must buy from the web US Composites seemed to have a competitive price. I ordered foam from them and got quick service and a quality product.

I also order from iboats, they had the best price on a bunch of other items I needed/wanted for the boat. Bimini is the first that comes to mind.

I ordered from Uscomposites, i order all my other things from IBoats... In Ny man, there seems to be NO ONE that can beat uscomposites prices, and quantity of goods. There shipping's not to bad either.

I've ordered from US Composites several times and they haven't let me down. They threw in some new pumps with my last order

I got my glass off ebay and all other glassing materials from Us composties. The shipping for Us comp is pretty crazy (bought $400 of stuff, paid ~$150 shipping ), but it evens out with their great prices.

my bad...YES try ebay first for fiberglass. I bought like 18 yards of 18 oz for $30, and a 50 yard roll of 4'', 6 oz tape for a mere $12.

People that sell epoxy there are tricky though...they'll say "2 gallons" of epoxy, $120 or whatever...that's 1 gallon of resin and 1 gallon of hardener. US Composite gallons are sold WITH hardener included.

Okay so 2 questions here.

First is about polyester resin. Is there a downside to using it?

What about buying from a place like advanced auto? I can get a gallon of poly with hardener for $40, where 1/2 gal of epoxy from us composites is $38 plus shipping.

Depends what you are doing if y ou need a lot then buying in 5 gallon buckets is going to be cheaper then buyin 5 gallons.

I used poly.. the only down side is you need to use csm between your cloth layers, but if you use biax then your good to go.

I bought from uscomposites. like lowkee said shipping hurts so try your best to order it all at one time...

Other then glass, i buy everything at iboats.. if they arent the cheapest call them up and they will price match.. all you have to do is provide a link to the other web site that is offering the SAME product for cheaper.

I used poly in my rebuild, no issues, epoxy is a superior product, but, if you know you have poly to begin with, (most boat hulls do), then you will have no problems and the poly is a little cheaper.

I had to read again but did not see what you are repairing. I see hull repair, but is it a hole, an extension like Oops? the amount of resin is related to the amount of cloth you are trying to get wet.

Check out fiberglasssite.com. They have a document that lists coverage by epoxy or poly, and by type of fiberglass (biax, csm, etc). Their prices are good and shipping is good.

Its a small hole, after being ground out is going to be approx 2" wide by 6" long.

Well, Ive decided to buy locally. I just need to know how much resin to get. I have no problem buying say a whole gallon even if im not going to use it for a while IF it keeps for a while once opened. but if I only need say a quart for this job, id rather buy a quart... know what i mean?

The only problem buying the resin from your local auto parts is it is a waxed resin, which means you will have to sand between between layers for good adhesion. The stuff you get the other guys is unwaxed and you can lay-up each layer without sanding, you use the wax additive on the last layer.

I was planning on putting all the layers together then attaching it to the hull... not a layer, dry, layer, dry, layer, dry, etc.

xxx.boatus.com/boattech/casey/17.htm

that article outlines doing it that way.
