Best repair manual for a 78 4hp carb work?

I just got a 78 mercury 4hp tonight, that has had all the gaskets and impeller replaced within the last two years... Less than 3 hours on the motor.. ever.. For $100 But, the guy left fuel sit in it for a year and half.. The inline fuel filter they put on it is brown, so I assume the fuel is varnished up.. I was wondering what manaul would give me the detail on removing the carb, and settings for it? I see most manuals are not model specific.. Thanks....

That engine was known as a 'Gnat'... the right manual for it is Merc #90-75512. Most manuals are not dedicated to a particular engine, rather are for quite a few similar engines...

That manual covers your 4, also 4.5, 7.5, 9.8, 20 and 40hp....

Just a Merc marketing thing... still good engines....

Ok, thanks.. Are the seloc books any good for this motor? Or will the shop manual show better detail- pictures on removing the carb? Thanks..

If you're looking for toilet paper, then the solec is a bit coarse. The cylmer is better for that. If you want to fix your engine, get the Merc manual....
