Re: Best replacement for 1978 Merc 898

Thanks guys.. keep the good tips coming!

So far the general consensus seems to be that a crate motor is a good idea, given I change the appropriate externals to marine parts (thanks for the lead on the super-cheap marine alternator Ron!).

Unfortunately I have to pass on the complete motor and outdrive upgrade idea. Way too pricey for my blood to do that. If I had the dough I would consider that though.

Option1
GM crate motor for a 1978 350 truck - remove and replace marine specific externals
Option2
rebuild current 305 - still need to replace burnt starter, get new alt and manifolds/risers
Option3
marine short block or long block + add'l parts

Anything I'm missing?

I see option 1,+ option 3 as being the Same Thing.......

The GM Goodwrench motors are Long Blocks,.....
There ain't much to the Removing,+ Selling.......
It's more of Adding the Required Marine Accessories to the Long Block............

This thread Started with you looking for a Long Block,+ You were going to Reuse the Required Marine Accessories from the 305,.......
Now it seems that you're looking for a Complete Drop In Motor.........
If that is in fact the case,......
Start looking for a Storm Damaged Hull,.. With a running motor.....
You can Strip out Everything,.. Use what You Need,+ Sell off the Rest........
There's Got to be abunch of Salvage boats down your way.........

That way you could Update your power by 10,..20 Years..........
That's how My power went from a 1974 140hp, to a Mid/late 90s 4.3LX.......

Re: Best replacement for 1978 Merc 898

UPDATE:

A Propower Gold 350 LB is on it's way from ebasicpower.com to my mechanic. I am also ordering up an Edelbrock 2101 manifold (or should I cough up about $15 more for the 2701?)and 1409 carburetor from Summit. Everything else is going to be re-used from the old 898.

What caused all this? Overheating the engine to the point it died. Wiring harness and shift cable were both completely melted (both have already been fixed) along with the ignition coil being fried. Now old engine has no power under throttle and water in the block (steam coming from old carb and from around heads).

Cause of overheat? Newbie mistake, not replacing water pump impeller every year.

$5k lesson learned? If your boat indicates 'any' problems, don't run it unless sure!

Power Graphs on this link, descriptions below:
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/manifolds/chevy_sb_perf.shtml

Edelbrock Performer EPS (PN# 2701):
"Chevrolet 262-400 Small-Block V8
PERFORMER EPS (idle-5500 rpm)
Designed for 1986 and earlier 262-400 cubic-inch Chevys, the Performer EPS dual-plane manifold is optimized to deliver superior performance with Edelbrock square-bore Performer Series or Thunder Series AVS carburetors. This small-block Chevy manifold has a runner design that's "tuned" for peak torque around 3500 rpm on a 350-inch engine and it's ideal for power from off-idle to 5500 rpm. Dyno tests showed gains of 5 hp and 9 ft/lbs of torque over the Edelbrock Performer manifold #2101 on a 350 Chevy. From 3000 to 4500 rpm, the increases averaged 5+ ft/lbs. of torque for more performance where you need it most. Look for the Performer EPS to "up the standards" in dual-plane intake manifold design. Match with a dependable Edelbrock square-bore carburetor for maximum performance gains. Also available with PermaStar or new EnduraShine finish for a look you've got to see to believe"

Edelbrock Performer (PN#2101)
"Chevrolet 262-400 Small-Block V8
PERFORMER - '86 & EARLIER (idle-5500 rpm)
Designed for street 1955-86 262-400 c.i.d. small-block Chevys. #2101 is stock replacement/street legal part for 302, 327 and 350 V8s with OEM 4-bbl. or Edelbrock #1400 carb; 1966-72 (1973 non-California) cars, 1966-83 trucks and Suburbans; except stock equipped EGR. #3701 is stock replacement/street legal part for 305, 350 and 400 V8s with OEM 4-bbl. or Edelbrock #1400 carb.; 1972-86 and GM corporate engines with 350 V8s; 1981-86. Performers accept late-model choke, waterneck, air-conditioning, alternator and H.E.I. Has provisions to add oil fill tube. Not for 1987 and later cast iron or Chevy Bowtie heads. Will fit 1987 and later stock aluminum heads. Available with standard finish or polished."

The EPS manifold was specific designed for a square bore carb. like the Edelbrock or Holley. The std. Performer is capable of running a spreadbore or square.
If you are going to run the Edelbrock carb I would opt for the EPS due it will keep air flow alittle bit smoother, but not enough that you would ever notice the effects from it.
Ken
