Alright Fella's. My Wife has allocated $6000 for Me to set a boat up. I would love for You folks to give Me some input on what I should look into. I am open to a RIB or SIB. It's main use will be two seperate, week long trips. One on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. The other on Lake Superior, West out of WaWa. In both instances, the boat will primarily be used as a way to jump from one remote river to the next. I'm basically using it as an "insertion" craft to escape the crowds and cast flies to unpressured Wild Steelhead. Would also love to get on Lake Erie 3-4 times a year for Walleye. This would really be the only time I would be drifting in open water.

I have looked at JPMarine, Saturn and a few others. Would obviously love a Zodiak, but probably not gonna happen unless I can get mama to come off of more funds. What would a Bombard Cammando run new.

Also, for the few times I would be sitting in open water, are the ribs far superior in dealing with waves, or just a little?

Fire away. Going to Superior the second week of May and need to be ready to roll.

Zodiac and Bombard are nice but expensive inflatables, will need more cash to buy engine too. If going for rib will definitely need a trailer. Any sib well inflated performs excellent, just jumps a bit more on choppy seas. If wanting toughness a JP 380 with a 20 HP engine would be the ideal way to go. If not that tough Saturn same siize and engine will be fine. A 420 is too big if just boating with 2-3 passengers at the most. A 15 HP weights near same as a 20, so go for a 20 if wallet permits.

Happy Boating

Thanks Bud. It is gonna be the JPMarine boat. They just seem more built for some of the crazy stuff I'm gonna try to do with it. Gonna get a 20 HP, and trailer as well. That should be a good set up to start with.

As it happens I have a Zodiac Pro II 470 RIB that I am planning on selling this spring. The hull is a '98. The motor is a '06 Yamaha 40 4-stroke (remote controls, power tilt and trim). The tubes are PVC and were new at the beginning of '11. The boat is on a 2010 Load-Rite trailer. The boat has a bench seat and console with Yamaha digital gauges and a depth finder. I keep the boat covered on the trailer when not using it. I have had this boat out on Lake Michigan and Lake Erie as well as numerous rivers. With two adults the boat will go right at 30mph at WOT and at ~4000 will get ~10mpg at 18mph.

This boat is located in Northern VA. outside of DC.
