Re: Best Tiller Outboard
I have an 18' jon boat that is bottom wide 48", so it is not a heavy boat,
and it moves pretty good with my Nissan 18hp 4 stroke. The boat will take
a 40hp, and sometimes I wish I had more power, which would probably put
90% of the boat out of the water under WOT. Looking around for a 30hp or 40hp, there ain't any to choose from.
I did find a Merc 40hp 4 stroke, but it weighs 216 pounds. Looking round some more, I see posts and some info about the new Etec motors coming out in the fall that are 30hp and 40hp. They are supposed to weight in at less than 150 pounds for starters. This weight advantage is also carried through in the Etec lineup, and there are interesting videos on youtube showing tests.
I know than an extra 74 pounds hanging over the back of the transom on my boat, with the same power motor, would make a dramatic difference, so I'm going to wait for the new fall Etec motors. I hope the price is not too shocking.
It will be interesting to see if the other manufacturers are capable of responding and competing with this Etec development.
