Best Used motors?? $1000-$1500 80-150HP 20 inch shaft ????

Guys-

Need a new motor want to spend between $1000-$1500 what are the best types of motors out there in that range?

Early-Mid eighties Johnson?
Early-Mid eighties Evinrude?

Early nineties?

What do you guys think?

Johnsons and Evinrudes are the same motors (until whenever it was the Johnsons started becoming rebadged Suzukis)

I think a nice JohnnyRude 90-140 from the 80's would be an ideal motor for you.

I agree, in that price range you are looking mid 80s which is good, I personnly think they are some of the best engines built, they actually did it right back then.

From the mid 90s till BRP boaught the company they seemed to be more worried about how to cut cost than making a good engine.

I have an '81 50 and it is bullet proof, still has the original power head and I just checked compression last weekend, 125 cold, aside from a clogged carb and killing a couple lowers(my fault) I haven't had and problems at all.

I agree with the Johnson, Evinrude thing, however the individual motor you get will only be as good as it's previous owners care and maintenance.

Hey thanks guys!!! I really need a new motor bad my old 67 80hp is dead!! Thanks for the input i think i will look for a mid eighties johnnyrude!!

Be aware the mid 80s was about the changeover time from engine HP to prop HP, I'm told about 10% difference so you may pick up a few extra horses.

Pick up a 80's merc or mariner 90. They dont call them tower of power for nothing. One of the best power to weight you can get.

The towers are good motors but a little more cold natured and finicky than the V4 JohnnyRudes.

And from what I have found harder to work on.
Just my 2 cents though from the encounters I have experienced..
