Best way to flush out the salt water?

I took my boat out in the salt water for the first time last weekend. I have a 1988 2-stroke 25 hp Evinrude on it. When I got home, I ran the motor for about 15 minutes in a 30+ gallon garbage can full of fresh water. Is this a good way to clean out the salt water? I've been told that using the muffs is better, because with the barrel I'd just be recycling the salt. However, with all the spilling and refilling that I was doing, I can't imagine that much of the salt water actually made it back in to the motor.

Also, the pee stream was strong, but was hot and steaming as it came out of the motor. Is that normal?

I'd appreciate any tips - thanks,
MIT

I think you killed the salt dragon with the 15 minutes of flush.

You should have no worries.

first, there's little salt water in your motor; it all drains out when you lower the motor. Next time the guy who said that about muffs gives you advice, do the opposite. You are just washing off salt residue from the inside.

15 minutes is excessive, especially if you are in a neighborhood.

flushing is a good idea but not at all necessary. Yours is a salt-water motor. Like all of them.

If you can, flush at the ramp; after the salt water dries inside, flushing doesn't do but so much good.

Flushing engine on a barrel for 15 minutes is too long, will have excesive amount of warm water and 2 strokes oil running throught engine and that ain't good. If flushing on a barrel start engine and disconnect hose, will give sufficient runing time to properly flush engine interior. Using muffs at ramp or house will be much better, will avoid thinking were to dispose off properly all that contaminated water including cleaning barrel oil mess too.

Be sure to thoroughly rinse down the exterior; especially the areas around the transom mount and tilt mechanism.
