best way to preserve motor cowling gasket?

What is the best way to preserve the motor hood/cowling gasket and keep it from getting hard and crumbly?

1986 Evinrude 110 hp

Speaking of motor cowling gaskets, are replacements available? Something like a universal...cut to fit?

jimmy i've used fuel line, taken a razor knife, and split it and slipped it on.
the best way to preserve it, is when stored keep the boat and motor covered. i made a cover for my complete engine from left over vinyl from and upolstery job.

I wipe mine down occasionally with petroleum jelly.

I too like the Jelly, for more ways than one, lol. I ve been told armorall in the sun cracks and dries out the rubber from the UVs. Good trick about the fuel line though, and yes, you can buy a universal trim that will work fairly cheaply.

Well, Vasoline may be answer -- I guess I'll use that unless someone has a reason not to. Certainly is an easy answer.
