Was wondering what model years would be the best for Johnson/Evinrude motors in the 20-35 hp range that still ran with points and condensers?
Thanks!

Youll be getting a wide range of answers on this one based on personal preference.

Late 50's (57,58) are my personal favs.

A pair of Golden Javelins on a mahogony boat are my next project, just gotta run it by the boss.

Just about any of them can be very reliable and great to own. The 9.5 hp model was very different than the rest and is both a pain to work on and hard to get parts for, but they are great little motors when they are running properly.

In the 25 - 40 hp range, I like 25 -35 hp series built in the 50s, with the "skinny" midsections. These later evolved into the 28 & 33hp models of the 60s and a 40 hp model in the 70s.

The beauty of the older, points equipped OMCs, is that they are so simple. If you have one with a mechanically sound powerhead and gearbox, keeping them in a good running condition is easy and doesn't cost much.

I like the old Big Twin class of the late 50's plus I like the 18's as well. The old ones with the clamshell engine shrouds are my favorite models. Not only did they have a sturdy metal shroud (instead of fiberglass) but they also had brass moving parts, versus plastic. The 57-58 era motors I believe were the best quality motors out there and there are still bunches of them running. Non-running ones don't take much to bring them back to life either.
