Beware the green leaker

92 Merc 350 Magnum, Alpha 1 gen II leg
Cant say I havent heard it here before but I had to try it. On my set up I have full closed cooling with a 3 in spacer between the exhaust manifold and riser, when I assembled the motor 2 years ago I used the "green" gasket between the manifold and spacer, used the oem Merc gasket between the spacer and riser.Well end of the season I was smelling burnt antifreeze on hot start up, you guessed it, it was the greenies, lesson learned, oem gray gaskets only from now on

I would think that the stainless steel block off plate sandwiched between gaskets would be a far superior way of doing it. Have zero faith in a simple gasket seperating the closed cooling system from the raw water exhaust, since the closed system runs under some pretty good pressure, making longevity even sketchier. Costs a little more, but the plate should last just about the life of the boat and would just need 4 gaskets, instead of 2 when changing things out.
