Just wondering, did YOU ever forget to remove the strap that holds the boat to the trailer and then you did not understand why the boat did not slide into the water?
Or even better, did you ever forget to remove the transom saver?Or worse did you ever forget to put it back on?
Or how about, did you ever find out in the middle of the lake that you forgot your bait in the car?

Re: beyond the plug club.

Drove 8 miles to the lake removed the straps, installed the plug, backed down the ramp..... and my boat key was at home

Drove to the rifle range, unloaded everything, set up my rest, placed a target out at 400 yards.......... yup forgot the bullets

Had a Fire Marshall ask to see my explosive license while on a movie set..... yup left it on the kitchen table

Regardless of what you do you have to smaile and laugh a bit..... because you know it will happen again ;)

Yes, you do. Have to smile and chuckle that is.

It's very embarrassing to back down the ramp and go to release the bow strap - and - - find your boat is floating the trailer by the transom tie downs. Especially at Waterbury Reservoir on a busy summer weekend. With 5 or 6 impatient boaters waiting their turn.

But I of course have never done that. So I don't know anything about it. Right...:)

Nope, but forget my lures back at home,,, 1.5 hours away...

Forgot drinks and food on one overnight fishing trip, luckily there was a few old bottles of water on board, some stale crackers and poptarts. Yeah, that was an unforgettable trip

Re: beyond the plug club.

Yup... backed down the ramp fired it up and tried to idle off the trailer and got nowhere. Happen to look at the back of the open hatch in my Pacifica and no straps in sight.

I'm really anal about not joining the left the plug out crowd. When warming the boat up on muffs I always touch the plug I just put in... and as added protection I keep 2 in the engine compartment and 2 in the toolbag in the bow. Ya just never know...

I saw a guy forget the transom straps, it was a bass boat with a big merc 200hp or something outboard, the guy just gave a little gas and when boat didn't slide off right away he just flogged it, i'll never forget seeing the whole transom go under water and about 500 gallons of lake water come over it, lucky for him the boat still had the trailer under it, and the tow vehicle held up.

Re: beyond the plug club.

You folks might get a kick out of this...

My wife's brother is an avid fisherman/boater, so when he heard I was getting a new boat he offered to teach the obvious things a newbie should know. You bet, I took him up on the offer.

Yes, he pointed out the things that are now second nature to me, but he added that he has a "routine that I do and don't let anyone help me with." The idea is if someone else "helps" you can easily get distracted and miss something.

Fast forward three months where my wife and I pick up said brother to go fishing at a lake new to me and wife, but a favorite of his. We get to the ramp, remove the cover and everyone starts doing their own thing. Brother asks, "Say, would you like me to back the rig down the ramp for you?"

Hmmm. "Actually, thanks, but no. I kind of have my own routine."

So as he and my girl are walking down to the ramp, I do one quick walk around and, sure enough, the plug is in, but the transom straps are still attached.

I never said a word...

Re: beyond the plug club.

So far I've only omitted the plug once, and that was a shallow 14ft tinny. I think I gave myself a mild hernia pulling it up on shore and got the plug in after some of the water drained.....looked a little strange in the water with the nose so high

I've never left the plug out since. I put it in before I leave the house and check it ( routine ) when I take off the gunnel strap.

Hopefully I'll have as comprehensive of a checklist when I get the big boat done.

I did manage to leave my fish finder in the drawer at home once though, and we bought a map for the lake we went to and promptly lost it somewhere in the boat, went back to the truck, back to the boat, said the heck with it and fished, retrieved the boat and found the stupid thing next to the seat...it just happens sometimes.

Strap ????? What strap?

I'm two houses from the community ramp and typically only use it twice a year (per boat). A buddy of mine has the strap for my Sea Ray. (I either need a longer one or need to lower the rollers since I got a tandem). The other boats have yet to make it past the ramp.
To answer your question - nope, just the plug.

Re: beyond the plug club.

When I first got my boat, I left it in the water (BIG MISTAKE). Anyway, I thought I would be smart and take the kill switch out at night to deter theft. This routine worked flawlessly for a short time. Then one fine morn i cranked on it till the battery gave up. Brand new boat so I called the dealer and started #$%@#! All i could hear was crickets when the guy asked me if the kill switch was in place!!

If anyone were to attempt to steal a boat on our creek, they would have to run a gauntlet of rednecks!:D
They would stand a better chance of actually stealing it from the driveway.

You distracted him when you asked about backing down the ramp, all your fault, then let him go ahead with the blunder knowingly....
And your own brother-inlaw even I LIKE IT

Yep did that

THE one time I didn't check my battery before I left the house, launched the boat, yep battery was dead!

Yep did that last weekend. Man did I feel dumb! Had to use my truck battery to jump it off then had to pull start when I cut it off to fish!:D

Luckily, (knocks on wood) I have not left the ramp without the plug; yet!

Have any of you ever ran up and over the bow stop while loading?

Re: beyond the plug club.

This one probably takes the cream.
My brother in law came back from a very successful fishing trip on the cape (Cape Cod).
He parked his car at his farm in Hubbardston,MA and left it hooked up to the boat, but he forgot to take the leftover mackerel bait ( few pounds of it) out of the car.It sweltered in the summer sun for about a month, but it was not until his wife asked him why the vultures were pecking at his car that he finally discovered his little oversight.
He used to call his car the "fish mobile".This changed into the "dead fish mobile".
He tried to clean it but the smell did not get out of the upholstery. He ended up donating the car to some kidney fund.
